Negative Painting to Reveal the Subject Artist's Medium:
Acrylic Is a reference picture required?
Note from the Artist:
Michelangelo claimed that his subject was already there in the block of marble. All he had to do was remove the excess material. This method also holds some truth in negative painting. Discover the dynamic results of negative painting! Start with an exciting background and then paint around the subject to reveal it. Simplify color theory and learn how to infuse your work with rich, loose and glowing colors. Discover techniques for creating interesting edge qualities such as lost edges, overlapping, and interlocking shapes. |

Monotype Printmaking Artist's Medium
Watercolor & Artist's Ink Is a reference picture required
No The Artist's description of the workshop:
I will show you the technique using plexiglass and watercolour printmaking inks /watercolour from the tube and gum Arabic This version would require printmaking paper Bfk is a good brand. various mark making items are used with either technique eg bubble wrap, string, corrugated cardboard to mention a few. |
Materials List:
1) Plexiglass (a little larger than the paper you will work on or smaller if you want a border). You can buy various sizes of plexiglass at an art store in the printmaking section. Another option is to use Mylar paper -( a bit harder to work with) 2) Speedball water soluble block printing ink ( minimum one colour - black or three colours ( red, yellow, blue) or more colours. Alternately you can use watercolour FROM the TUBE or gouache 3) Printmaking paper like Bfk. Alternately you can use hot pressed watercolour paper or rice paper 4) Mark making objects like bottle caps, combs, sticks, q-tips, thread etc 5) Gum Arabic or liquid dish soap- only a small amount needed 6) rubber brayer 7) barren or wooden spoon 9) newsprint, old towel, paper towels I am guessing that plexiglass could cost $10-15 approximately for 8 by 10 inch but Opus has smaller pieces from $3.50 each |

Pushing Colour in your Soft Pastel Paintings Note:
Members will work along with the artist Artist's Medium
Pastels Reference picture required?
Bring a pear or two with a piece of cloth that’s either dark or light (any colour) OR a photo of them |
Materials List: Soft pastels: Unison, Sennelier, Mount Vision, Schminke, Great American. Bring a range of darks, mediums and lights. Bring colours you love too! - piece of vine charcoal to sketch (or you can use pencil) - Small piece of sanded paper (about 6 x 8 in). An idea is to purchase a couple of sheets as a group and cut into smaller pieces. I would suggest Pastel Premier ‘Italian Clay’ from Opus. (Another option is LaCarte ‘Sand’ available at Art World.) - A small sketch book with two pencils - light (HB) and dark (e.g. 4B or 6B) - A piece of glassine (available at Opus) to cover your pastel piece - Toilet paper for cleaning pastels - Other items to consider: a container for pastels you are using (e.g. black styrofoam tray), Wet Ones or vinyl gloves |

Animal Portraits Artist's Medium: Acrylic or Gouache Notes from Carla
As I do not really feel that a portrait could be done in the time allotted-I am thinking that a demonstration would be the best choice. I will bring my paints and canvas and go over the steps I take when I create a pet portrait. |
Notes Contued
I usually lay in the background prior to beginning the animal. Members can bring any photos that they want and I will be happy to have a look at them and make any suggestions on composition and clarity of the image. I paint my portraits in a couple of distinct styles-one being more traditional and one what I call my rainbow style-with added colours that you would not find in real life. |

Vibrant Oils Artist's Medium: Oil Is a reference picture required:
No |
Joane says:
I have decided to bring 4 paintings of different styles and discuss (to the best of my ability) the process it took to complete them. I will probably let everyone paint what they desire and go around to see and help them with colour and composition, if time allows. I paint in oils which doesn't allow completion in 2-3 hrs., it takes many layers. |
