Artist's Notes
I have been working on a series of tropical leaf paintings for about 15 years ago. At first it was about capturing the light and colours, then pushing the colour relationships. I’m not done yet. A few months ago I stumbled upon my latest direction quite by accident while designing my business cards. I want to explore a semi-abstract interpretation of the tropical leaves focusing on negative space. I look forward to showing you how I begin my work and how I move through the stages of deciphering the complex patterns that the leaves create. Materials List: Canvas Pastel Pencil Brushes in a range of sizes from 1 to 1 ½ ” down to a rigger for fine lines Small Palette Knife Water Bucket Paints: Titanium White, Cad Yellow Med, Lemon Yellow, Quinacrodine Gold, Cad Red Lt, Cad Red Dark, Dioxazine Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue, Optional Colours: Sap Green, Indian Yellow, Quinacridone Violet, Quinacridone Magenta Stay wet palette Paper Towels Members please note only odor free oils and solvents are allowed in the center

Kat says:
I have been working with water images since I began my art practice, first as a ceramic artist for nearly 30 years and since 2003 when I closed my pottery studio/gallery and began to paint. I am a process-oriented painter and love the interaction with materials that push me forward. Being surrounded by the ocean is a constant and endless source of inspiration. I am happy to share my process, as I explore from beginning inspiration through the stages of developing layers and how I move toward resolving a piece. |

MIXED MEDIA with Acrylic paint Demo or Paint Along?
Both Are members required to bring a reference picture?
NO |
Materials List & Notes from Artist:
Please bring your regular kit for painting/drawing and the brushes you like to use. A sketchbook if there isn’t one in your kit. I recommend adding one larger cheap hardware store brush about 1.5”-2” size and an inexpensive roll of ‘painters tape’, 1” wide. Black ink and any other colour if you have it, or you can thin down acrylic paint. I will be working with acrylic paint for the demo. AND Bring Anything Under The Kitchen (Studio) Sink! pencils, graphite sticks, charcoal, oil & chalk pastels, markers, COLLAGE materials, matte medium & brush for gluing collage materials. A large’ish’ sketchbook (I use one about 17” x 13”). If you don’t have one this size, bring one that’s a size you’re comfortable with. I will be working with acrylic paint and different materials from the above list for the demo. Don’t feel you need to buy anything new…you likely have many of the above list in your studio already! Painting in the Tonalist Style A brief description of session: Victoria artist and storyteller Shannon Holms will lead a tonalism painting workshop. Tonalism is a way of painting landscapes that is characterized by soft, blurred lines, gentle use of colors in the mid-range of tones and values, and an elegantly simple composition.Tonalist painters were drawn to both the natural and spiritual realms. Landscapes are typically luscious and luminous with evocative atmospheric effects featuring misty backgrounds and illuminated moonlight. Tonalist painters seemed to favour unconscious states favouring harmony and introspective contemplation. Artist's Medium

This workshop will be mostly demo, but ample time will be given to participants to work on their project, after all that’s why we’re here isn’t it—to have FUN? I will be available throughout the workshop with further demos when required, and for assistance if required. The ultimate goal—to let loose and enjoy yourself, tap into your creative juices and do something completely different! |

Painting a Mini Series of Abstract Artworks Artist's Medium Acrylic Barb's Note: I generally use acrylic paint because I like how fast it dries, and you can keep working for the most part, without having to wait for it to dry. We will see how acrylic paint “acts” at various stages of dryness/thickness, and how we can use that to our advantage. Aside from the primary medium (acrylic paint), I use a lot of collage in my work, sometimes in the earlier stages to build up the surface of the painting, or later, to show the details in the collage. I could do a workshop or two on just making collage! Demo or Paint Along?

Notes from artist about the session
Using live materials as inspiration I will lead a sample short guided meditation to relax and relate to breath and body. The importance of taking time to do a proper set-up of your work area as well. Some areas of discussion will include creating a palette, the use of drawing as a warm-up and as a skill in itself, close study vs. overall dynamics, demonstration of capturing the essence of the subject matter via blind and semi-blind contour drawing.
