Painting the West Coast Forest. Light and Shadow Effects

Artist's Medium

Are members required to bring a reference picture?
YES

Picture
Session Description:  Using reference photographs taken from Mt. Doug (or your own photos) we will be painting a forest scene to try and capture the feeling of filtered light, shadows and atmospheric perspective while using a limited palette.  We will put more emphasis on what we see in terms of value in the picture rather than colour and I will paint a scene using complementary colours on a coloured (grounded) canvas.
Materials List and comments from artist:
Canvas; painted with a coloured ground.
Paints (oil or acrylic)  Bring your own palette but I will be using the below colours
1 cool/green  yellow: hansa yellow light
1 warm/orange any cadmium yellow or Indian Yellow
1 warm/yellow red cad red light or burnt sienna or transparent earth red
1 cool/blue red: alizarin crimson or permanent rose or quinacridone violet
1 cool/green blue: cerulean blue, cobalt blue or phthalo blue
1 warm/red blue: ultramarine
blue
1 white
I make my own greens.  For the darks I make sure I have a very dark blue and a very dark red.  I don't use black  Paynes Gray can work as well.

Medium:  I use Gamblin Galkyd Gel, but any will do if you use one (Linseed, Poppy oil etc)
Brushes: a variety of sizes, I tend to use all shapes but I like a crisp edge from an angled or square flat brush  for finishing
Odorless mineral spirits/rags etc
Members please note only odor free oils and solvents are allowed in the center

Materials List from artist:
I don't have a specific materials list. I would simply recommend bringing a full range of colors in acrylic or oils.
Members please note only odor free oils and solvents are allowed in the center
Notes from Artist
The project will be about: how to create your own expressive interpretation of the subject matter in a reference photo.
We will start with a reference photo and then can look at where we might make the decision to follow our own expressive guidance  regarding  composition, choice of colours and brush strokes.
I would suggest we use oils but individuals can bring the medium they are most comfortable with.
I often start out with acrylics, when I am experimenting with composition and colours, and complete the painting in oil.

Rock my World / Rocks
Artist's notes on the session
A tutorial about methods to create paintings of rocks
How to create volume, or the illusion of 3D and solidity: light and shadow, gradual changes in color, warm colors come forward, cool colors recede
Using watercolor technique to “charge” an area with color, which fades gradually
Preserving whites with frisket, tape, or masking with a paper stencil
Using transparent colors to allow for luminous layers of paint
Building up layers to intensify an area
Working light to dark vs dark to light
The background: creating shadows so that the rock appears to be in the light

Canvas versus paper: demos using both

Artist's Medium
Watercolour on Japanese art paper (i.e. masa paper)
Notes from Artist
This is a workshop on the effective use of the watercolour spray bottle to create unique watercolour impressions.  It works great for foliage and in creating interesting impressionistic/artistic effects.  We'll also talk about edges: the various degrees of hard and softness, and the "lacy" edges that only a watercolour spray bottle can create.
Are members required to bring a reference picture?
Yes This is the reference photo
Picture
Please bring a letter size print out of the Raven image, portrait orientation.
Materials List
A couple 8x10" pieces of masa paper.  (Masa paper sells by the sheet at about $3.50 each at the main art supply stores downtown.  One sheet can be torn down to 8 small pieces suitable for our workshop.  Tearing instructions:  with the long side towards you, fold in half and cut.  Repeat with those two pieces to get four.  Repeat with the four to get eight.  Each piece should then be about 8x10".)
 * Holbein 2 oz Watercolour Spray Bottle from Opus.
 * Chinese paint brushes are optional (brown hair).  If members have some, they can use them as I will be
demonstrating with them.
* Winsor Newton artist grade watercolours from the tube:  neutral tint and prussian blue.
 * a pencil and eraser
 * Rinse containers,
 * Absorbent paper towels

Artist's Medium
Pastels

Notes from Artist:
We will use vine charcoal or pastel to sketch in our primary shapes. Then we will use pastels and isopropyl alcohol with a brush to lay down the darks and lights in the painting. From there we will use pastels and blending tools to further develop the painting.  My focus will be on blocking in and painting the negative space first.

Are members required to bring a reference picture?

Yes. This is the reference photo.
Picture
Materials List &
  • Vine charcoal (optional).
  • 1 - 1 inch flat brush for the alcohol.
  • 1 - piece of Pastelmat or UArt or Canson Mi-Tientes paper, 16x20” or larger. You can get any colour – brown, navy, maize, rust, burgundy, or black.
  • Feel free to bring along any pastels that you have.
  • Q-tips, tissue paper, blending stump, or sponge for blending.
  • Gloves, if you like.
  • I have a large selection of pastels that I can share with you.
  • I will also provide isopropyl alcohol.
  • I use Sennelier, Rembrandt, Mungyo, and Nu-Pastel pastels and paint on Pastelmat. Pastelmat has the amazing ability to hold onto pastels allowing layering and bold strokes. It can be bought at Monk Island Blue or ArtWorld - 70x50cm pieces are available, or you may buy a 35x50cm piece from me on the day of class for $10 per 35cm x 50cm sheet.

I will be working in Acrylic.  I draw with my brush so if Members wish to work in graphite or charcoal or WC that is fine too.
Are members required to bring a reference picture?
No.  Christine will print and supply handouts.
She says:
after I have shown projections of  my rock paintings I will project this image of rocks onto screen and work from same
Materials List from Artist:
My basic colours in Acrylic are Alizarin Crimson, Hansa Middle Yellow and Ultramarine . Of course, others for accents . These basics make a good black.
Artists Statement
My process is to observe.  To work on site is important; however, to me it is overwhelming.  Only nature can put it all together so beautifully. I observe, photograph and sketch on site.  It is in my studio where the painting emerge.  I paint until the remembered spirit is found. The painting leads me through this process.

Watercolour paints and mixing palette

Here are the colours I’ll be using and some  recommended substitutes.
  • Deep Green (I recommend Jadeite Genuine or Perylene Green)
  • Indanthrone blue (ultramarine will work as a substitute)
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Green Gold (or other cool yellow)
  • Quinacridone Violet (Dioxazine Violet or crimson will work as a substitute)
Watercolour brushes
A large quill, mop or other wash brush that can keep a point (I’ll be using a Da Vinci Casaneo size 2 quill and size 24 cats tongue. A hake brush will work but will give a looser result)
A small round for detail (I’ll be using a size 4 Da Vinci  Casaneo)

Watercolour paper in a block or stretched in a board (I like Fabriano Artistico cold press, which dries quickly. Arches cold press is also a great choice which gives you more wet-in-wet work time but is slower to dry). I’ll be using 11” x 14”.

Kitchen paper or a clean rag
Water pot
Pencil for drawing
Eraser (just in case)

Or, Deborah says you can bring your own reference material, Remember to keep it simple, as less is more! She strongly suggests that the size of your ref image be no smaller that 8x10

Notes from Artist and Materials List
We will concentrate on using the “Famous Figure 8 and its use for boats”.
To obtain the proper shape of a boat, I suggest the use of the figure “8” approach. When drawing a boat in perspective or fore-shortening, this figure “8” seems to work easily.  We will do a quick tutorial on this method of drawing boats.  From there we shall do a painting in either oils or acrylics of a row boat or sailboat.

Material List
Most important - A Sense of Humour and No Stress!
Bring what’s in your toolbox, this includes all the art supplies you will need to draw and paint for our session.
I recommend a standard palette, a painting surface you are comfortable with for our time together
