Painting the West Coast Forest. Light and Shadow Effects Artist's Medium Oils Are members required to bring a reference picture?
YES This is the reference photo
Session Description: Using reference photographs taken from Mt. Doug (or your own photos) we will be painting a forest scene to try and capture the feeling of filtered light, shadows and atmospheric perspective while using a limited palette. We will put more emphasis on what we see in terms of value in the picture rather than colour and I will paint a scene using complementary colours on a coloured (grounded) canvas.

Materials List from artist:
I don't have a specific materials list. I would simply recommend bringing a full range of colors in acrylic or oils. Members please note only odor free oils and solvents are allowed in the center
Notes from Artist
The project will be about: how to create your own expressive interpretation of the subject matter in a reference photo.
We will start with a reference photo and then can look at where we might make the decision to follow our own expressive guidance regarding composition, choice of colours and brush strokes. I would suggest we use oils but individuals can bring the medium they are most comfortable with. I often start out with acrylics, when I am experimenting with composition and colours, and complete the painting in oil. |

Watercolour on Japanese art paper (i.e. masa paper) Notes from Artist
This is a workshop on the effective use of the watercolour spray bottle to create unique watercolour impressions. It works great for foliage and in creating interesting impressionistic/artistic effects. We'll also talk about edges: the various degrees of hard and softness, and the "lacy" edges that only a watercolour spray bottle can create. Are members required to bring a reference picture?
Yes This is the reference photo
Please bring a letter size print out of the Raven image, portrait orientation.

Materials List
A couple 8x10" pieces of masa paper. (Masa paper sells by the sheet at about $3.50 each at the main art supply stores downtown. One sheet can be torn down to 8 small pieces suitable for our workshop. Each piece should then be about 8x10".) * Holbein 2 oz Watercolour Spray Bottle from Opus. * Chinese paint brushes are optional (brown hair). If members have some, they can use them as I will be demonstrating with them. * Winsor Newton artist grade watercolours from the tube: neutral tint and prussian blue. * a pencil and eraser * Rinse containers, * Absorbent paper towels Members please note only odor free oils and solvents are allowed in the center

Pastels Notes from Artist:
We will use vine charcoal or pastel to sketch in our primary shapes. Then we will use pastels and isopropyl alcohol with a brush to lay down the darks and lights in the painting. From there we will use pastels and blending tools to further develop the painting. My focus will be on blocking in and painting the negative space first. Are members required to bring a reference picture? Yes. This is the reference photo. |

My process is to observe. To work on site is important; however, to me it is overwhelming. Only nature can put it all together so beautifully. I observe, photograph and sketch on site. It is in my studio where the painting emerge. I paint until the remembered spirit is found. The painting leads me through this process.
